What are the most common sports injuries?

There are a variety of sports injuries that are commonly encountered when you’re playing sports or exercising. These are some that we often see and help our patients with.
  • Ankle sprain

Ankle sprains tend to happen when someone rolls their ankle during motion, causing the ligaments to be excessively stretched or torn. The main symptoms that result from this are pain, swelling, and stiffness in the ankle area.

Typically, the treatment for this involve rest, ice, compression, and elevation. However, if the sprain is severe and does not improve within a few days, it is worth contacting a medical professional for an evaluation and potential treatment options. In some cases, a cast or walking boot may be required to ensure a full and proper recovery.

  • Concussion

A concussion is a mild, traumatic brain injury that typically occurs when someone takes a blow to the head. Typical symptoms include headache, dizziness, short-term memory loss, and other cognitive symptoms. While concussions tend to be associated with losing consciousness, it is worth getting a medical evaluation after a blow to the head, even if you remain conscious.

It’s also worth noting that long-term exposure to even minor head injuries from tackles and bumps that don’t register as concussions can have a cumulative effect on brain health. That’s why it’s important that they be monitored by your long-term GP.

  • Groin strain

Groin strain occurs when you experience an excessive stretch or tear to the muscles of the inner thigh and hip. This tends to happen when someone engages in sudden, explosive movements like sprinting, kicking and changing direction. The main symptoms of groin strains include pain and swelling, but severe tears may result in your mobility being affected for weeks or even months.

  • Hamstring strain

Hamstring strains tend to happen during sports when someone accelerates quickly or sprints hard and their hamstring muscles stretch or tear. This may result in symptoms including pain, swelling, and bruising. While mild strains can be addressed with rest and at-home care, you may need to see a doctor when the damage is more severe.

  • Knee joint injuries

Injuries to the knee joint happen when different areas to the knee are damaged, such as bones, ligaments, cartilage or tendons. Common symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, instability, and reduced range of motion, with the severity depending on the type of knee injury that someone has sustained. Meniscus tears, ACL tears, and osteoarthritis all fall under the umbrella of knee injuries.

  • Nose injuries

Nasal injuries like a blood nose or broken nose tend to be caused by a direct blow to that area of the face. It tends to involve damage to the soft tissues, bones, and cartilage within the nose. In many cases, a nasal injury can heal on its own. However, it is often worth getting it assessed by a medical professional to ensure there’s no severe problems or potential long-term issues.

  • Shoulder injuries

Shoulder injuries are a common occurrence across many sports, particularly ones that involve the arms going over the head. Football, tennis, and swimming in particular tend to cause these injuries frequently. The primary treatment option is usually physiotherapy, but cortisone injections are available with Praxis GPs if required.

  • Stress fractures

Stress fractures are very small cracks that develop in bones as a result of repetitive stress. They typically occur in the legs due to activities like jumping or running on hard surfaces. Stress fractures happen when muscles are fatigued and are no longer able to absorb the shock to protect the bones. A medical professional is able to examine the severity of your stress fractures and advise you about the best way to help them heal.
